Can you wear denim with denim?

Yes, if the two washes are obviously different. Double denim fails in exactly one way: two shades close enough that the eye tries to read them as a set and finds they do not match. Wide gap, deliberate. Small gap, accident.

The rule

This is the same near-miss problem as navy against black, and it has the same fix. A light shirt over dark jeans reads as two pieces chosen together. A mid-blue shirt over slightly different mid-blue jeans reads as an outfit that was meant to match and did not. If you cannot tell at a glance which one is darker, they are too close.

When it works

  • A light or white-wash shirt over dark or black jeans.
  • A dark jacket over pale jeans.
  • A third colour breaks the two apart — a white tee under the jacket.
  • One of the two is black denim, which the eye files separately.

When it fails

  • Two mid-blues that are close but not equal.
  • Matching top and bottom from the same wash, which reads as a uniform.
  • Heavy distressing on both pieces, which doubles the visual noise.

What the app would say

The same call, in the words it comes back with when you photograph the mirror.

ALMOST

The washes sit too close

  • The denim shirt and jeans are a shade apart, which reads as a failed match.
  • A darker jean or a white tee underneath would fix it.

Reading the rule is slower than checking. Point the camera at the mirror and get this applied to what you have actually got on.

Is a denim jacket over a denim shirt too much?

It can work, but only with three clearly different weights — jacket, shirt, jeans, each visibly a different wash. Two is easy, three is a project.

Does black denim count as double denim?

Barely. The eye reads black denim as black trousers, so a blue denim jacket over black jeans is not really the same combination and not the same risk.
