What colour shoes go with grey pants?

Almost anything. Grey is a true neutral, so brown, white, black, navy and burgundy shoes all work with it. Brown is the safest with mid-grey, white sneakers are the safest with any grey, and black is best kept for charcoal.

The rule

Grey has no temperature of its own, so it does not fight a warm brown or a cool black. What decides the shoe is the shade of the trouser. Light grey wants contrast underneath, so a darker shoe anchors it. Charcoal is already dark, so a lighter or warmer shoe stops the whole leg reading as one block.

When it works

  • Brown shoes with light or mid-grey — the warmth lifts a cool trouser.
  • White sneakers with any grey, which is why the combination is everywhere.
  • Black shoes with charcoal, where the tones are close enough to read as one intent.
  • Burgundy with mid-grey, when you want the shoe to be the only interesting thing.

When it fails

  • Black shoes with light grey — the jump is so hard the shoes read as borrowed.
  • A brown so close to grey in weight that neither leads.
  • Any shoe whose colour is repeated nowhere else, in an outfit that has no other accent.

What the app would say

The same call, in the words it comes back with when you photograph the mirror.

GO

Grey and brown, clean

  • Mid-grey trousers with brown leather — the warm shoe stops the cool trouser going flat.
  • The belt matches the shoes, so the two leathers agree.

Reading the rule is slower than checking. Point the camera at the mirror and get this applied to what you have actually got on.

Do black shoes go with grey pants?

With charcoal, yes. With light grey it is a hard jump that draws the eye to your feet for the wrong reason. Brown or white handles light grey better.

What colour belt with grey pants?

Whatever colour your shoes are. Grey does not care; the belt and the shoes do.
