What colour shirt goes with navy pants?

White, light blue, grey, olive and mustard all work. Navy is the second most forgiving trouser colour after grey. What it does not take is black, which flattens it, or a second navy in a different shade.

The rule

Navy is a dark, cool neutral, so anything lighter than it gives you contrast for free. Cool shirts — white, light blue, grey — read as clean and safe. Warm shirts — mustard, rust, olive — read as considered, because a warm top against a cool bottom is a real colour decision rather than an absence of one.

When it works

  • White or light blue, which is the default for a reason.
  • Mustard or ochre, which is warm enough to be a decision.
  • Olive, which shares navy's muted depth.
  • Grey, when you want the outfit to say nothing at all.

When it fails

  • Black, which pulls the navy towards looking like a faded black.
  • A second, different navy — two near-matches read worse than a contrast.
  • Anything neon, which turns navy into a background rather than a colour.

What the app would say

The same call, in the words it comes back with when you photograph the mirror.

Bold colours work well

  • The mustard shirt and navy trousers are a strong warm-against-cool pairing.
  • The shirt, chinos and sneakers hold one consistent smart-casual level.

Reading the rule is slower than checking. Point the camera at the mirror and get this applied to what you have actually got on.

Can I wear a navy shirt with navy pants?

Only if they are the same navy. Two shades that nearly match read as a mistake; one shade reads as deliberate. If you cannot check them side by side in daylight, pick a different shirt.

Does a black shirt work with navy pants?

It is the weakest option. Black drains the blue out of navy and the pair ends up looking like one dark colour that went wrong somewhere.
