What does smart casual actually mean?

One level, held all the way down. Smart casual means nothing on your body is dressier or scruffier than the rest of it — a collar or a knit on top, chinos or dark jeans below, a leather shoe or a clean sneaker underneath. The dress code is consistency.

The rule

Most smart-casual failures are not colour failures. They are level failures: one item from a different world than the others. A suit jacket over joggers, a dress shirt over shorts, a technical running shoe under wool trousers. The eye reads the gap instantly. Pick the level you are aiming for and make every piece agree with it.

When it works

  • Knit or collared shirt, chinos or dark denim, leather shoe or clean sneaker.
  • A sport coat over a plain shirt with dark trousers.
  • Every piece could plausibly appear in the same room as the others.
  • One accent carries interest and everything else stays quiet.

When it fails

  • Tailoring on top and athletic wear below.
  • A formal shoe under casual trousers, which is the reverse of the usual mistake.
  • Three different levels at once, which reads as no decision at all.

What the app would say

The same call, in the words it comes back with when you photograph the mirror.

RETHINK

Two outfits at once

  • The tailored jacket and the athletic trousers belong to different worlds.
  • Pick one level and let the shoes agree with it.

Reading the rule is slower than checking. Point the camera at the mirror and get this applied to what you have actually got on.

Are jeans smart casual?

Dark, plain jeans are. Light, ripped or heavily faded jeans are not — they pull the level down below whatever is above them.

Can I wear a t-shirt for smart casual?

A plain, well-fitting one under a jacket, yes. A printed or graphic tee moves the outfit down a level, and then everything above it is doing the wrong job.
